Drivel

I got a lot of hits on a recent blog in which I referred to my preaching as pious drivel.  Only one person commented to say she disagreed.  Where were the other 90+?  This hurts my feelings.  Maybe it is time to go talk to the vocation director at the Trappist monastery where we practice a lot of silence.  Time to become a monk?  To eat veggies all the time?  No ESPN?  Is this what the public wants?

  1. The blog reading public requests that you continue to post your words of wisdom to challenge us to think about our lives and what God wants from us.
    Amen.

  2. I find your blog thought provoking. Tell the jerks who disagreed to go see the vocational director. I am hanging on to life by a thread and I need to see that other people struggle with this gift of life.

  3. I would be such a waste for you just talk to God with your mind. He told me so. Maybe just take a hit of some air since it is so thin up in Snow Mass.

  5. I'd like you to give seminars to the other priests that I've heard preaching. They need a page out of your preachin play book.

  6. (Sorry, this comment turned into a essay…)

I remember reading that post and that comment. I rolled my eyes at her for missing your point: stay humble, pride is the enemy. Lo and behold, she was the one who got it right!

It reminds me of when I was hosteling in Europe and met a group of gorgeous girls. One said she was ugly because of her round face. She saw my total exasperation, lit up like a christmas tree, and said "REALLY?!?" with such pure hope. In fact, her radiance made me flustered, and I tried to play it cool. She interpreted this as meaning that I did, in fact, think her face was freakishly round and ugly. Pretty darn ironic. She became insecure because I was too insecure to reject her insecurity, and I was insecure because she was ridiculously gorgeous! Human psychology, huh?

Anyway, I put myself down once a minute, but assume everyone else is totally confident and just being modest. What a joke. I still think this post might be a clever ploy to show how negative thinking can lead to absurd conclusions. But I'll learn from my mistake with the girl and give my honest opinion:

I used to sign up for Rohr's daily thoughts by email, but I like this blog a lot more. It shares the best of Rohr, but has a much more down-to-earth quality. Rohr writes nice things about addictive behavior, but you can tell he's never really been through it. He also writes like he's on a tibetan mountaintop, whereas you write like a guy who needs a workman-like effort to make progress (like everyone does, Rohr included). This isn't to put him down, just to point out what makes this blog special.

  7. When Jesus got frustrated, He went into the Wilderness for 40 days. When He returned, He healed the sick, and raised the dead.
Two months at the monastery = around 60 days
    Hmmmm.

You spread a lot of healing, with your words.
    Just sayin'

  8. Get over it Fr. Terry,
I've known you for over a quarter of a century and really do appreciate your insight and point of view. BUT this insecurity of yours is getting rediculous.
    Please stop begging for approval.
