Desire

You don’t change one desire until you replace it with another desire just as strong.  A person says, “I desire to stop drinking.”  OK.  But what desire is going to replace drinking desire?  You may stop drinking for one reason or another, but if there is no other desire to replace it, you will go back to drinking.  People go into and out of Recovery or drinking bouts all the time because they do not have a strong desire to replace the drinking desire.  What might that desire be?  The desire to live a sober life.  Not dry, which is simply not drinking.  But a sober life, which is a spiritual path, of steps, guides, fellowship and service.  Takes a lot of time?  Yes, but then so did the drinking, and where did that get you?
