Poverty in terms of a spiritual practice is not about having nothing. You don’t have to give away everything. You are not a monk. Poverty in the world means not being attached to any of the things that you have. This helps you to stay more focused on what is important, and the source of enduring happiness. This poverty gives you a sense of freedom. You are not tied to your “stuff.” And in time, with your prayer practice, you will see where you can be of service to others in giving them some of your stuff that they truly need. You separate your needs from your wants. Wants are about ego, self. Poverty in this sense is about freedom that endures the loss of stuff.
