The purpose of the Koan is to take you beyond thought. You can never think your way to union with God. Knowledge is about something, but is not the experience of union, or deep connect that might change you for the better. “One hand clapping” is not some riddle to be figured out in the mind. It goes beyond the mind or beneath the mind. It requires mediation, stillness and silence with oneself, leaving the mind on the sidelines for other pursuits later. Many of Jesus’ sayings are of a Koan nature. They are meant to halt us on our superficial paths, and bring us to be still, wait, and maybe wait for quite some time. Who has the patience for such waiting? The Adept.
