Go Forth

In the Bible there are several instances where one is invited to go forth, leave where they are, the familiar, and journey.  It is like a pilgrimage.  The bible words for "go forth" really mean "Walk toward yourself" as Rami Shapiro says.  In the spiritual life, the stage of deep meditation is a pilgrimage whereby you journey toward your truer self, your deepest heart self.    This is also a meaning of "salvation."  You go into the darkness of unknown lands, beyond familiar thoughts, feelings, and comforts.  Where is God in all this darkness?  God is like your shadow, goes everywhere with you but in this deep darkness you cannot see, apprehend God.  People in Recovery are moving away from familiar addictions, friends, places, lifestyles and into a new life.  You cannot feel the sun if you stay inside the familiar.  You have to go outside to feel the sun.  You have to go outside your familiar, but limited,  self, to experience this new life of salvation.  In the sun you see your shadow.
